Grytviken Whaling Station Drone Footage - South Georgia Island (4K resolution)
This is raw drone footage of the shore whaling station at Grytviken, South Georgia Island, including the British Antarctic Survey base , graveyard and Hydro Dam.
Footage was recorded with a DJI Mavic Air in April 2018, recorded by Geometria Ltd. for the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. All flights were operated under permit from GSGSSI.

Geometria scanned the Tititiri Matangi lighthouse in 2016. The lighthouse is the oldest still in operation in New Zealand. The lighthouse and surroundings was scanned by Daniel McCurdy of Geometria Ltd, with a Faro x130 laser scanner.

Reliance Tipple (Wyoming) laser scan flythorugh

Geometria laser scanned the Reliance Coal Tipple in Reliance, Wyoming in 2012. The tipple functioned from 1910 until 1936, used as a sorting station for coal from the Reliance Coal Mine. The tipple was scanned by Daniel McCurdy and Russell Gibb using a Faro x130 laser scanner.

Geometria scanned Discovery hut in 2010 and again in 2011, as part of the K021 program. This video shows the exterior and the interior of the hut. Discovery Hut was built during Robery Falcon Scott's first expedition attempt to reach the South Pole. Fascinating for its history. Something I find equally fascinating is how, as a race, human beings are perfectly capable of introducing equipment & supplies to an environment but are entirely inept when it comes to removing those same supplies or materials when we all but abandon some otherwise untouched place on earth. Shameful.

Would you recommend taking a drone on a cruise to these islands? Do you need a permit?
Yes you need a permit to fly a drone anywhere on or near the islands, partly since there is a very real risk of impacting bird populations. All of our work was undertaken with and for GSGSSI, with guidance from experts on the islands. I would generally say don't take a drone with you, but I don't speak for the GSGSSI, so maybe get in touch with them directly.
It has deteriated a lot since I was there in January 1995 for almost two weeks on an amateur radio expedition. Three of us operated as VP8SGP. The two sealing ships are still there and I see the whaling ship, the Petrel, is still there. The docks were intact and we used them to offload our supplies. We put our tents in the blubber factory, which I see is no longer intact nor the mechanic shed where we set up our radios. The barracks building was in much worse shape when we were there. The church looks the same, and the foot pump organ actually worked when we were there.
Do you know if there are any ham radio operators working there now? If I visit, I'd love to have a go at broadcasting from there, if they'd let me. I'm currently at Introductory level. I plan to start Intermediate this year. I probably won't go there until 2026 at the earliest.

My uncle, former RS Mayor George Osselton, used to tell me stories about "picking boney" at the Reliance Tipple when he was a kid. Interesting piece of history in Sweetwater County and coal mining. I'm a 4th generation coal miner.

Stunning. Superb footage. I have a Mavic Air 2 and know all about the hazardous nature of flying in Sports mode (see previous comments & answers). I dumped mine straight into the Mediterranean, whilst trying to shoot a friend's boat at full speed (I was operating the drone from the boat). Ouch! Luckily the footage was captured on the app (and was actually quite good). But yes, superb flying and composition from Daniel, despite his freezing fingers. Excellent work.

Somewhere, on the left hand side of the bay approaching Grytviken, are the remains of an Argentine helicopter shot down during their invasion in April 1982. Not sure where it is in your video, but it is a scar of the Falklands War.

Great footage but I'm a bit disappointed that during my time down there we were told that under no circumstances were we allowed to use drones due to the hazard to the bird population. Whilst I see you were able to obtain a permit, I don't think the local bird population recognise the permit to work system.....
Very good point, and I appreciate you raising it. It wasn't a simple task to get permission to fly, for this reason. We were there strictly for scientific purposes (archaeological), and flew under guidance from biologists who were on base. We generally needed to fly higher than we wanted, to ensure that we didn't disturb the bird population, who tended to fly lower. We also had spotters at all times and aborted the flight if birds got too close to the drone. I suspect the time of year would impact whether drone flying was possible with regards to bird populations, but I'm not an expert on that aspect.
